Discussion on U.S. Presidential Elections in St. Petersburg NGO

On July 17th, St. Petersburg NGO "German-Russian Exchange" and information project for young people "Polit-Gramota" ("Political Literacy") organized a discussion about the 2008 presidential elections in the United States, and invited the U.S. Consulate General representatives to participate in the event. Consular Officer Douglas O'Neill and Information Resource Center Assistant Vera Sevastyanova acted as experts on the U.S. presidential elections. Yevgeny Konovalov, Chairman of the Russian Social-Democratic Union of Young People, was the third expert. Guests of the discussion not only carefully listened to the experts’ opinions on various aspects of the 2008 presidential campaign in the United States, but also asked challenging questions and made their own comments that demonstrated how deeply young people in Russia are concerned about the U.S. elections this year. At the end of the discussion, a poll was conducted to find out which candidate to the U.S. presidency, Barack Obama or John McCain, is more popular among the guests.
